Infrastructure is inadequate in many regions of India. Communities, homes, and livelihoods vulnerable and unable to withstand natural disasters. We save lives and alleviate suffering during and after natural calamities and disasters.
Relief & Disaster Management: Our goal is help local communities during natural calamities and disasters. A cyclone in the Indian Ocean equivalent of a hurricane called “Fani” hit the coast of Odisha state on Friday, 3rd May 2019 at a magnitude somewhere between Category 3 and 4. The wind speed was 200 km per hour. The local Indian Government pulled off a near miracle, evacuating over 1.2 million people ahead of the storm, resulting in a death toll under 50. Many local villages, were able to take shelter in the STEP campus’s concrete buildings. We helped with food and water during this crisis. So far, 5000+ have been helped with relief and food packages.
COVID-19 RESPONSE: India is one of the populous countries with 1.2 billion people with a fragile economy, struggling to help the needy and poorest of the poor. COVID-19 lockdown was announced on Tuesday, March 24th, a nationwide lockdown until 30th May 2020. STEP is committed to serve the poorest of the poor in this time of crisis, created by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this difficult time STEP served the families in remote villages with food packets and distributed masks (produced in our sewing center) in the remote villages.
